Do you do do No-Mow May?
I do, have done since goodness knows when … that’s because I’m a Wild Gardener. I tend to leave things to Nature as much as I can, and partner with her as much as I can too.
I’ve always had wild areas in all my gardens, going right back to Dad and childhood. Dad and Uncle Perce would always be saying now why do we need to do anything there? The grass and the wildflowers, buttercups, dandelions, daisies, stitchwort, they’re doing no harm under the apple trees (for instance), indeed they’re helping to keep the moisture in the soil.
Bare soil loses moisture quickly. It evaporates right out, as the soil breathes. When there’s plants and/or grass on they keep the moisture in, recycling it as they do their photosynthesis-thing. So I plant in amongst everything, like this …
